Shanghai Conference on Gender Studies

"Below, please find a conference call for a conference on gender studies scheduled to take place in Shanghai June 2009. Please feel free to submit an individual paper abstract directly to the conference organizers or to email me with an idea for a panel topic. As I mentioned at the women's caucus meeting I am interested in organizing one or two panels on political/political science related themes. I will be travelling until July 7th but will be able to work on conference/panel organizing after that."

International Conference on Gender Studies in 2009

Call for Papers

The University of Michigan and Fudan University Joint Institute for Gender Studies will host the first international conference on gender studies in China from June 26 to June 29, 2009. The conference is part of a long-term collaboration between the two universities to promote scholarship on and curriculum development of women's and gender studies. Aimed at furthering scholarly communication and exchange between scholars in and outside China, this conference encourages the participation of a new generation of Chinese scholars, students, and feminist activists, whose fresh scholarship and vibrant activism has not yet been exposed adequately to the international academic world. The conference welcomes research papers with a focus on China or ones that address global issues in diverse regions and contextx or through a transnational feminist perspective.

University faculty members and graduate students are welcome to submit individual paper abstracts or panel proposals in line with the following suggested themes:

2.        Gender in post-socialism

3.        Economic empowerment for gender equality

4.        Gender, culture and the state

5.        Gender and public policies

6.        Gender, work and the workplace

7.        Gender and education

8.        Gender and history

9.        Gender and the law

12.      Gender and migration

13.      Gender, ethnicity and class

14.      Gender and aging

15.      Gender and the family

16.      Gender and sexuality

17.      Masculinities and femininities

18.      Feminist activism, local and global

19.      Transnational feminist theory

20.      Strategies of "gender mainstreaming"

21.      Integrating social practices in gender studies curriculum

22.      Feminist scholarship and activism

The conference languages are Chines and English. Please submit a 200 word abstract or panel proposal in either or both of these languages. Please provide relevant information regarding the academic position and institution of each presenter, including e-mail addresses. The joint Institute for Gender Studies will provide room and board for presenters at the conference in Shanghai. The deadline for submitting abstracts and proposal is July 31, 2008.
